42 Screens: Guitar Hero series canceled

The Guitar Hero has been killed!

The Guitar Hero franchise has been dropped.  In a financial conference call at 5:30 EST software giant Activision/Blizzard announced that they are dropping the music franchise in order to focus on more profitable franchises like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft.

“Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011,” – Release Statement

Activision Blizzard Inc. said Wednesday it lost $233 million, or 20 cents per share.  Net revenue fell to $1.43 billion from $1.56 billion in the previous year.

This shocking move most likely mean that Band Hero, the Guitar hero spin off focusing on groups and family fun, is also dead but brings up the question as to what will happen with the DJ Hero franchise.

This news could be the end of Guitar Hero but there is a chance another company will pick up the franchise and revitalize it.  I am also curious to see how this effects Rock Band
